WHEATUS MISE-EN-SCENE

Mise-en-scene in the Wheatus Teenage Dirtbag music video is a very important aspect of the music video. As the video is portrayed from the not-so-popular boy's point of view. The camera would frequently cut to the stage where Wheatus was performing. This stage shows that they were performing, for you, the audience. This forms a sense of authenticity, this can create a bond between both the viewer and the artist. This can therefore help the artist gain fans as the viewers will support them because of the bond created by the video.

Mise-en-scene helps to distinguish the characters from one another, the 'Nerd' wears peculiar clothing that might not be considered 'cool' by the other kids at the school. This makes the viewer create emotional feelings of sympathy and dis-likeness between characters. This aids the story the song is trying to tell.

  1. Mark 2 out of 4 I think that you have picked half 'performance' as your choice of media language and half 'mise-en-scene', thereby completing neither fully.
    1. I would give as much attention to the 'world' of Wheatus / teenager as to the stage set, for example, explain that the busy high school corridors mean that he is jostled and barged by the soccer guys and overlooked by the girl of his dreams. The highlight of his fantasies depicts a traditional high school prom with dance band and glitter ball in which he feels out of place until his dream girl approaches. His frilled evening shirt symbolises how much of a nerd he is, getting clothing codes so wrong, compared to the 'cool guys' like the soccer boys. The staircase at home where he falls asleep then wakes up frames the narrative, suggesting that his success with the girl at the prom was all a dream.
